Why online
Not a compromise.
A different format.
My preference is always in person. Face to face, I can hear, see, and correct technique more immediately — and there's a quality of presence in the room that a screen can't fully replicate.
But online lessons work. The core of what I do — listening carefully, understanding how a student thinks, building something over time — translates well to video. Students in other cities, expats who've moved away, people with schedules that don't fit travel: online lessons keep the work going when in-person isn't an option.
The lesson structure is the same. The student portal handles scheduling, notes, and invoicing just as it does for in-person students. And the teaching philosophy doesn't change: your goals, your pace, the music you actually love.
What you need
Simple setup.
Nothing specialist.
- A stable internet connection — the most important thing. Unstable audio makes lessons frustrating for both of us.
- A laptop or tablet with camera and microphone. A phone technically works but the smaller screen and fixed position make it harder.
- Your guitar, tuned or ready to tune. A clip-on tuner is worth having.
- A quiet space with reasonable lighting — ideally where the camera can see both your fretting hand and your picking hand.
- Zoom or Google Meet — whichever you prefer. No special software needed.
"One limitation worth naming: I can't physically adjust your hand position online the way I can in person. I can describe and demonstrate, but the tactile correction isn't there. For students working on fundamental technique from scratch, in-person lessons will always be more effective."
How it works
From first contact to regular lessons.
Get in touch
Use the contact form or WhatsApp to introduce yourself. Tell me where you are with the guitar, what you're hoping to work on, and whether online suits your situation. I'll get back to you within a day.
Trial lesson
We start with a single 40-minute session. We cover where you are technically, what your goals are, and whether online lessons are a good fit for how you learn. No commitment beyond that first session.
Set up your student portal
If we decide to continue, you get access to the MyMusicStaff student portal — where your lesson schedule, notes, practice assignments, repertoire, and invoices all live. One place, accessible from any device.
Weekly lessons
We settle into a regular weekly slot. Lessons follow the same structure as in-person: focused blocks, always grounded in music, always adapted to where you are on the day. You leave each session with clear notes and a practice assignment for the week.
Common questions
Before you get in touch.
Are online lessons as effective as in-person?
For most students at intermediate level and above — yes, largely. For complete beginners still building basic technique, in-person lessons will always give me more tools to work with. That said, many students have made real, sustained progress entirely through online lessons. The honest answer is: it depends on you.
What platform do you use?
Zoom or Google Meet — whichever you have and prefer. Both work well for lessons. The key variable is your internet connection, not the platform.
Why 40 minutes and not 60?
Online lessons are more cognitively tiring than in-person for both student and teacher. Forty focused minutes consistently outperforms sixty where concentration starts to drift. If you find you want more time as lessons progress, we can revisit.
Do you teach all styles online?
Yes — the same range as in-person. Rock, blues, jazz, folk, classical, contemporary. RSL exam preparation also works well online; many students have passed their exams with entirely online preparation.
Can I switch between online and in-person?
Yes, if you're within my travel area. Some students do this naturally — in-person when possible, online when travel isn't practical. The lesson rate differs, but the continuity doesn't.
How is payment handled?
Invoicing is handled monthly through the student portal. Everything is clear, itemised, and easy to track. No surprises.
